Roasted Broccoli with Lemon

Vegetables are the most nutrient dense of all the food groups. They are low in calories, high in vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytochemicals, yet most of us aren’t eating enough. Broccoli is a great source of vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and a good source of vitamins B5, B6 and fiber. In addition, it also helps your body excrete excess estrogen from your body. This is important because many of us are taking in estrogen-like substances called xenoestrogens every day from our food and beauty products that are circulating in our bodies and causing hormone imbalances. Here’s a tasty simple recipe containing the nutrient dense super food courtesy of DrWeil.com.

Roasted Broccoli with Lemonroasted_broccoli_with_lemon-2-580

Makes 4 servings, 1 cup each

Ingredients:
4 cups broccoli florets
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper
Lemon wedges

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 450°F.

2. Toss broccoli with oil, salt and pepper. Place on a large baking sheet (not air-insulated) and roast until the broccoli is tender and blackened on the bottom, 10 to 12 minutes. Serve immediately, with lemon wedges.

Constipation & Low Back Pain Connection

Have you tried every modality out there with no relief?

Is your chronic low back pain worse some days than others?

Are your bowel movements inconsistent?  (Meaning you should have 2-3 movements daily 6″ or longer)

Are your stools difficult to pass or pebble like?

 

If you answered yes to any of the above questions then there is a very good chance that your chronic low back pain is coming from constipation, not because of something structural.  Let me explain.

When you do not have proper elimination of your bowels the contents within your intestines can build up leading to bad bacterial overgrowth, inflammation and pain.  When the intestines become inflamed/swollen they inhibit (stop) the abdominals from working.  The abdominals are important stabilizing muscles for the back and when they stop working do to inflammation your back has no support and now you are suffering from back pain.    Think of it this way you have a long garden hose that you tie off at one end.  You keep pushing water through it but it has no way out, overtime the hose tries to compensate by expanding, getting bigger and bigger, this is the inflammation in your body.  The majority of you out there that are currently suffering from chronic pain and inflammation are because of what you are putting into your body.   The American diet consists of C.R.A.P.  (Caffeine, refined sugars, alcohol and processed foods).    These foods offer no nutritional value and instead cause constipation.  Constipation overtime will lead chronic inflammation and chronic back pain and that is why many of you out there get no relief no matter what you do. 

There is good news to all of this and that is that you can reverse inflammation.  It will take some hard work on your end by changing your lifestyle but you need to ask yourself what’s more difficult, suffering from back pain or making lifestyle changes that overtime will make  you pain free, have more energy and possibly loose weight along the way.

Below is a list of tips that will help get you started to a healthier GI system:

  • A great place to start is your diet. Take a look at what you are eating day after day, writing it down will help immensely in helping you become aware of what non-foods you are putting into your body on a daily basis.
  • Drink more water: general rule of thumb is taking ½ of your weight and drink that many ounces of water. Dehydration alone will slow the bowels down and cause constipation.
  • Drink water upon rising. This helps to awaken the GI system and get things moving.
  • Replace foods that have a shelf life with real foods like fruits and veggies. These foods offer fiber that shelf-life foods do not.
  • Begin taking a high quality fish oil supplement: Fish oil offers healthy fats that become a lubricant for the intestines.
  • Begin taking a high quality probiotic: probiotics help to replace the bad bacteria with good.  Read our blog article “What are probiotics doing in your digestive tract”? for more information.
  • Exercise: Get yourself moving…when you move around it helps stimulate the intestines.
  • Mange your stress: Stress gets stored differently in all of us. Some of us hold stress in our shoulders, low back or belly region. Take a minute to see how much stress may also be contributing you’re unhealthy GI system.
  • Watch for food intolerances: when we eat foods that our body cannot tolerate this too can lead to bad bacterial overgrowth and inflammation. Signs of food intolerances can be anything from a headache, to gas, bloating diarrhea or constipation.

What you Need to Know About BPA

Bisphenol A is a compound tin_can250that is used to coat the inside of almost all food and beverage cans, including soft drinks. It is also used to make plastics, including baby and water bottles and sports equipment. It has been shown to leach into our food and drinks. What may come as a surprise is that it has been suspected of being hazardous since the 1930’s, yet is still found in a multitude of products today.

Increased research has been conducted over the past few years and alarming health concerns have surfaced. BPA has been found to be an endocrine disruptor, meaning that it mimics the action of hormones in your body causing several negative health effects. It has been shown to interfere with fetal and infant brain development, disruption of thyroid functioning, increased prostate cancer susceptibility, heart disease and diabetes. The FDA raised further concerns regarding exposure of fetuses, infants, and young children in a 2010 report.

A few weeks ago, the Washington Post (2/23, Layton) reported that ““Major US foodmakers are quietly investigating how to rid their containers of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical under scrutiny by federal regulators concerned about links to a range of health problems,” but the companies “are discovering how complicated it is to remove the chemical, which is in the epoxy linings of nearly every metal can on supermarket shelves and leaches into foods such as soup, liquid baby formula and soda.”

In addition, it reported that the “FDA does not know which companies use BPA, how much they use or how it is applied, because manufacturers are not required to disclose that information.

If you’d like to reduce your exposure to this harmful compound, stay away from food and drinks in metal cans, and plastic bottles (labeled with #3 or #7 on the bottom of the bottle), avoid heating plastic in the microwave or dishwasher, and choose to store food in glass instead.

Benefits of Cod Liver Oil

Omega-3 for youCod liver oil is beneficial  as a dietary supplement for many reasons:

  • It promotes heart health and normal cholesterol balance

Fish oil is very safe to take however contraindications are below:

  • If you have been diagnosed with the relatively uncommon condition of sarcoidosis, you should rigidly avoid sunshine and vitamin D.
  • If you are allergic to shellfish, have a blood coagulation condition, or are taking anticoagulants such as Warfarin (Coumadin®), do not use fish oil.
  • Cod liver oil contains both Vitamin A and D and over consumption of any supplement is never a good thing. Therefore, you many want to get your levels checked before taking fish oil as a supplement.

My Body Doesn’t Feel Right, but My Doctor Says I’m O.K.

Has there ever been a time in your life where your body just didn’t feel right? You then go to your doctor who tells you that you’re fine, and you’ll just “have to live with it.”  We hear stories like this over and over again, and today I’d like to share a personal experience I recently went through. A couple of months ago, I started to feel really run down. I was tired all of the time, sometimes I felt anxious, my heart would race (especially in the morning when I woke up), I had difficulty with my digestion, was dizzy and felt lightheaded when I stood up, noticed more hair loss, had cold hands and feet, headaches, and was getting sick more often (my immune system is usually excellent). I also noticed PMS symptoms, which I haven’t had since high school. Mentally I felt as if I were walking in a fog. I had trouble concentrating and an unusually poor memory.

My training in nutrition and wellness lead me to suspectadrenal that I had adrenal fatigue, which could also be the cause of my PMS symptoms (The stress hormone, cortisol, that the adrenal glands produce also impacts the production of the female sex hormones. As an aside, I should mention that cortisol also impacts thyroid function). Before I ran my own testing, I went to my primary care physician to get his input. He ran some blood tests and per my request also checked my cortisol, thyroid hormones, and checked for celiac disease (which is intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley). After reviewing the results, he said that everything, including my cortisol level, was “normal”. When asked what to do to alleviate these symptoms, he replied  “Sometimes you just have to learn to live with these things”. I must say that I have a tremendous amount of respect for my doctor, and the purpose of this blog is not to speak harshly about him or the medical community. My goal is to bring awareness to the notion that sometimes doctors don’t have all of the answers.

A week later, I repeated the testing through our clinic and was diagnosed with stage 2 adrenal fatigue. As I suspected, my adrenal glands had been overworked, and were not function properly, which was causing the laundry list of symptoms I mentioned earlier. I started taking bio-identical hormones (which are in liquid form and placed under your tongue), made sure to eat according to my metabolic type, and changed my exercise routine to one that would support my overly stressed body. I started to feel better in a couple of days. My mental clarity and mood were the first symptoms I noticed improvement in. My energy level has also gradually increased, and my PMS symptoms are gone.

You might be wondering how the tests my doctor ran came out “normal” while the ones that were conducted through our clinic weren’t. It’s because the tests we run look at sub clinical levels. In other words, the tests your doctor run are set up to identify disease or severe dysfunction. They are not sensitive to the more subtle shifts that take place in your body when you begin to have symptoms THAT CAN LATER BECOME DISEASE.

So, as for me, I’ve found one piece of my puzzle. I’m now working on getting answers to explain why I’m having issues with my digestion, something I’ve never had to deal with. If you need help putting the pieces of the puzzle together for your own medical needs, we’re here to help.

Balance your hormones…balance your life

Did you know that these symptoms and medical conditions may be indicative of a hormonal imbalance?

 

Hormone imbalances can be easily identified through simple lab testing. EVERY time we test our female clients for hormonal issues the lab results come back indicating low hormone levels. EVERY TIME!  Hormones play a critical part in keeping our bodies healthy and balanced. Because we see these results time and time again, we have dedicated this month’s newsletter to the importance of hormones, the causes of hormone imbalances, and most importantly, how YOU can fix them.  
 

IMPORTANCE OF HORMONES & WHAT CAUSES AN IMBALANCE

Hormones are chemical messengers that travel throughout the body coordinating complex processes like growth, metabolism, and fertility. They can influence the function of the immune system, and even alter behavior. Before birth, they guide development of the brain and reproductive system. Hormones are the reason why your arms are the same length, why you can turn food into fuel, and why you changed from head to toe at puberty. These glands make up what is known as the endocrine system (endocrine means “secreting internally”). The testes and ovaries, or “gonads”, are perhaps the most familiar endocrine glands. In males, testes produce sperm and secrete the male sex hormone testosterone; in females, ovaries produce eggs and the female hormone estrogen. It is these hormones that determine secondary sex characteristics like muscle mass and facial hair. They also help to orchestrate sperm production, menstruation and pregnancy. Other endocrine glands include the thyroid, pancreatic islets, and adrenal glands. The Estrogen and Progesterone Balance
These two hormones work opposite of each other. Estrogen works to retains fluid where as progesterone is a natural diuretic. Estrogen causes blood vessels to dilate (causing headaches) and progesterone causes blood vessels to constrict. Estrogen decreases sex drive where as progesterone increases sex drive. Research shows that women today, who are under stress, take the birth control pill; drink from plastics and who are on medications tend to be estrogen dominant. This imbalance of your estrogen to progesterone ratio can cause the symptoms and conditions listed above.  

Reduced Intake of Cholesterol can cause low hormone levels.
In today’s society we are taught to eat low fat foods which leads us to believe that all fat is bad, which is not the case. There is a difference between good fat and bad fat. We need “good” fat/cholesterol in our diets because cholesterol is the precursor to all of our adrenal hormones. Without it we cannot make hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, etc. Eating a low fat diet leads to decreased cholesterol intake which leads to decreased production of these vital hormones.

 

 

 

Prolonged or Repeated Stress  When the body is chronically under stress, this results in an increased production of cortisol (a stress hormone) from your adrenal glands. An increased production of cortisol leads to a decreased production of other vital reproductive hormones. Remember that stress can be in the form of thoughts, diet, exercise, or lifestyle…your body reacts the same!

 HOW YOU FIX IT:

1. Eliminate sugar, caffeine and processed foods from your diet.. These foods put stress on the adrenal glands, which impact hormone production.

 

 2. Include good fat in your diet.
Sources of good fat include seeds, raw nuts, olive oil, and avocados.
Fats to avoid: trans fatty acids, hydrogenated oils, margarine and vegetable oil.

 

3.Drink from glass bottles versus plastic.
The plastic in the bottle contains xenoestrogens, which act like hormones in your body. If plastic is your only option, be mindful of the quality of the plastic. Look for the triangle of arrows on the bottom of the bottle. You should see a number from 1-7. Plastic with the numbers #2, #4, and #5 are best. Most disposable water bottles are labeled #1.These are meant to be used once only, so never re-use your plastic water bottle and keep it away from heat. The plastic can break down, and leech these chemicals into your water. If you are going to drink out of plastic water bottles Fiji, Evian and Volvic are the better brands.  

 

  4. Eliminate stressors in life as much as possible. 
Stress increases the production of a stress hormone (corticotropin releasing hormone) which decreases the production of several other improtant hormones creating an imbalance in the body. This can cause moodiness,depression, bloating, chronic fatigue syndrome, infertility, as well as the conditions mentioned above.

 

  5. Get your hormone levels checked.
Simple saliva testing can identify if your body is producing the correct balance of hormones. Supplements are available if your hormone levels are too low which can alleviate your symptoms.
