The power of the media and society

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

classroomI had the opportunity to speak to an 8th grade class on Friday about the importance of fitness and nutrition.  I must stay first off that I commend the teacher for having the desire to education her students not only about the importance of fitness as well as nutrition but her desire to educate them on the balance of these two important topics.

The class that I spoke to comprised of about 40 students.  I was amazed how all of them were interested in what was being said as well as being participatory.  The topics that I spoke about were on strength, flexibility, stability and endurance and the importance of cross training and proper supplementation.  I spoke heavily about nutrition and what balanced nutrition looks like.  We discussed specifically what makes up proteins, fats and carbohydrates and what each of these items do for the body.   The kids were great, they were answering questions and asking questions and the questions were amazing!

However, one thing that I noticed was how influenced these 8th graders were already by the marketing of our media and views of society.  Some of the questions that came up were questions about 6 packs (in regards to the abdominals) and splenda & diet sodas (regarding staying thin). The question that blew me out of the water though was the question of what is the difference between lipo-suction and gastric by-pass.  Now, the question in and of itself is a great one.  However, the student goes on to ask which of the two are better and what goes through my head is “why is an 8th grader asking such a question”?  Unfortunately, I did not have time to ask her why she was asking such a question at such a young age.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile diabetes, obesity and an array of other health problems are affecting our young today. I am writing this blog entry to remind everyone who is reading this that the health of our youth is vital.  Families need to be educated as well as have discussions about healthy food options and fitness and families as a whole need to get healthy together.  Fun ways that a family can get healthy together are by cooking meals together, going to the park and playing, going on bike rides or taking hikes.  If you do not have proper education on nutrition or fitness find lectures and workshop in your area on such topics.  In addition, discussions about what being healthy is really about also need to take place. What I mean by this is that our young need to understand that just because someone has 6 pack abs does not make them healthy.  This subject becomes a difficult task because of how the media portrays “healthy” bodies.

I want to thank the 8th grade class and their teacher for inviting me into their classroom.  I would love to see more schools and teachers doing this for their students.  The benefits that come from healthy nutrition and proper exercise are endless:  Improved cognition and concentration, decreased anxiety and restless and improved performance both in and out and out of the classroom.

The Chakra Energy System: The Third Chakra

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

253_chakra_chart_-_ancientThroughout your body you have seven main energy centers called chakras that spin in a circular motion and are located along your spinal column up to the crown of your head. Each chakra radiates a different energy frequency of vibration, and is represented by a different color of the rainbow that resonates at that same level of vibration. Each chakra main center is connected to your being on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level. On the physical level each chakra governs a main organ or gland, which is then connected to other body parts that resonate the same frequency. Your chakras are interdependent on each other for harmony and balance.

Medical science has proven that toxins, which include negative thoughts, poor food choices, chemicals and preservatives, lack of sleep, and various other forms of internal and external stress influence your body. These constant forms of “pollution” can cause your chakras to become imbalanced, which may eventually affect you on a physical level. When unbalanced, your chakras can be either too open or too closed. By understanding the chakra system and working to bring it into balance you’ll be able to help improve your own state of health and well being.

Understanding the Third Chakra: The Solar Plexus

The solar plexus is associated with your power to be an individual and achieving wholeness. This chakra is associated with your connection with others, but it’s  emphasis is on your individual power and self-will. It is located along the spinal column, approximately two inched above your belly button. On a physical level, this chakra governs your digestive system, muscles, pancreas and adrenal glands.

Physical dysfunctions that can result from an unbalanced sacral chakra include stomach ulcers, fatigue, weight around the stomach, allergies and diabetes. Emotional problems include a low self-esteem, addictive personality, aggressiveness, and the need to be in control.

Is Your Third Chakra Balanced?

Select the group of words that best describe you:

1. Angry, controlling, workaholic, judgemental

2. Overly concerned with what others think, fearful of being alone, insecure

3. Respect yourself and others, has personal power, spontaneous, uninhibited

*If you chose #1, this chakra is too open, meaning it’s spinning too fast.

*If you chose #2, this chakra is blocked, meaning it’s spinning too slowly or  not spinning at all.

*If you chose #3, this chakra is balanced, meaning it’s spinning at the correct speed and maintains equilibrium.

Try the Following Daily Affirmations to Help Balance Your Third Chakra:

I accept myself for who I am.

I choose to treat myself with honor and respect.

I am open to receiving all of the good things life has to offer.

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in meeting the needs of those we love, that we forget to love and honor ourselves. Take the next couple of weeks to pay attention to how your body is feeling, and determine what your third chakra needs are. Feel free to contact us with questions or to learn specific exercises you can do to work on balancing your chakras. For those of you in the area, our Rejuvination Class that meets every Sunday incorporates several chakra balancing poses (see events page for more information). In a couple of weeks, we’ll discuss the fourth chakra, the heart chakra. If you suffer from high blood pressure or heart disease this information will be of particular interest to you.

Are you suffering from adrenal fatigue?

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Do you…

Suffer from sleepless/restless nights?

Suffer from night sweats?

Suffer from constipation and or diarrhea?

Suffer from fatigue and lack of energy?

Struggle to lose weight and or keep it off?

Suffer from mood swings?

Suffer from lack of libido?

If you answered yes to any one of the questions above you may be suffering from Adrenal fatigue.

WHAT IS ADRENAL FATIGUE?

There are two adrenal glands and each one sits on top of each kidney and are responsible for hormone production.  The hormones excreted by the adrenal glands are cortisol and DHEA.  In turn these two hormones continue to go on and make the sex hormones.  Therefore, when the adrenal glands have been overworked due to stressful situations such as long hours of work, lack of sleep/staying up late and a poor diet the adrenal glands stop working properly.  When the adrenal glands stop working this leads to adrenal fatigue.

Once the adrenals have become weakened you will begin to see situations arise as listed above.  The reason being is that when we are in a stressful situation whether it be physical or emotional our body releases cortisol to help up deal with the stressful situation.  In stage 1 of adrenal exhaustion one does not even feel stressed. In fact, typically one will fill energized and good because of the extra cortisol running through the body.  However, in later stages of adrenal fatigue typically stages 2 & 3 are when one begins to feel tired no matter how much sleep one gets.  The reason being is that as you move into later stages of adrenal fatigue your cortisol begins to run low and overtime the sex hormones become affected as well thus leading to severe fatigue, loss of sex drive, possible nights sweats, digestive problems and severe PMS symptoms for women.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF I SUFFER FROM ADRENAL FATIGUE?

You can test for adrenal exhaustion through saliva testing.  What needs to be assessed is ones cortisol and DHEA levels.  Cortisol should be higher in the morning as this is what wakes you up in the morning, hit its peak around mid day and then tappers off into the evening making one tired and sleepy.  Because cortisol changes throughout the day saliva tests are a good idea as you can test  the entire cycle (4 samples) of cortisol within a day. It is also a good idea to test estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels.  Saliva testing also tests for the active hormones in the blood stream where as blood tests the stored hormones. However, it is a good idea to have both tested.   If you are interested in saliva testing you can contact Replenishing Soul and we will gladly send you a kit that you can perform in the comforts of your own home.

CAN I RECOVER FROM ADRENAL FATIGUE AND IF SO HOW?

Yes, you can recover from adrenal fatigue.  However, it does take time.  The reason being is because your body has to reset and get back into balance.  Your brain and adrenal glands need to relearn how to communicate to each other.  If you suffer from adrenal fatigue it is a good idea to work with a Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach.  They can help you get back on track by evaluating and restructure your lifestyle as this is what weakened your adrenal glands in the first place.  Getting healthy again is about learning what foods and what proportions are right for your body and what type and what intensity of exercise is appropriate for your body at a particular time. You need to be taught how to manage stress through ways such as meditation or yoga.  In addition finding hidden stressors such as food intolerances also needs to be assessed.   Even though each person that we see in our clinic is entirely different and needs different strategies specific to them here are a few quick tips that will help you get back on track.

  • 1. Eliminate C.R.A.P. from your diet- caffeine, re-fined sugar, alcohol and processed foods
  • 2. Eliminate Gluten
  • 3. Get to bed by 10:00pm. Between 10pm-2am your body repairs physically and between 2am-6am your mind repairs. Therefore, if you are not sleeping between these hours your body is not healing.
  • 4. Find ways to manage stress

The Chakra Energy System: The Second Chakra

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

A couple of weeks ago we introduced the chakra system and discussed the first chakra, the root chakra, which is associated with basic human needs and survival. Before moving on to discuss the second chakra, here’s a recap about the chakra system.

253_chakra_chart_-_ancient Throughout your body you have seven main energy centers called chakras that spin in a circular motion and are located along your spinal column up to the crown of your head. Each chakra radiates a different energy frequency of vibration, and is represented by a different color of the rainbow that resonates at that same level of vibration. These constant forms of “pollution” can cause your chakras to become imbalanced, which may eventually affect you on a physical level. When unbalanced, your chakras can be either too open or too closed. By understanding the chakra system and working to bring it into balance you’ll be able to help improve your own state of health and well being.

Understanding the Second Chakra: The Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is associated with pleasure, sexuality, nurture, movement, change and emotions and is represented by the color orange. It is located along the spinal column, approximately two inched below your belly button, in the area of your reproductive organs. On a physical level, this chakra governs your sex organs, bladder, circulatory system, prostate, and womb.

Physical dysfunctions that can result from an unbalanced sacral chakra include impotence, frigidity, bladder and prostate problems, and lower back pain. Emotional problems include an unbalanced sex drive, instability, and feelings of isolation. Those of us who have an unbalanced sacral chakra might have difficulty allowing ourselves to feel pleasure or have difficulty with creative expression.

Is Your Second Chakra Balanced?

Select the group of words that best describe you:

1. Emotionally unbalanced, manipulative, sexually addictive

2. Overly sensitive, hard on yourself, feel guilty for no reason, frigid or impotent

3. Trusting, expressive, attuned to your own feelings, creative

*If you chose #1, your second chakra is too open, meaning it’s spinning too fast.

*If you chose #2, your second chakra is blocked, meaning it’s spinning too slowly or   not spinning at all.

*If you chose #3, your second chakra is balanced, meaning it’s spinning at the correct speed and maintains equilibrium.

Try the Following Daily Affirmations to Help Balance Your Second Chakra:

Who I am is good enough.

I am worthy of love and pleasure.

I have a right to express what I want and need from others.

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in meeting the needs of those we love, that we forget to love and honor ourselves.
